RefWorks guide

Find duplicates

There is a Find duplicates function on the Tools menu. This allows you to search your library for duplicate references which you may wish to remove. There are two choices, an Exact match or a Close match. Removing any duplicates will assist with bibliographies as they will not then contain duplicate references. It is therefore a good idea to de-duplicate from time to time.

Save references on the web

RefWorks has a bookmark tool to save references from a webpage. From the Extensions & Add-ons page, follow the instructions to install the Save to RefWorks bookmark tool on your web browser. You may need to display the bookmarks toolbar or menu bar on your browser before installing the bookmark.

Click on the Save to RefWorks bookmark on your web browser toolbar to save any page to RefWorks.

RefWorks Citation Manager

RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM) works with Word and allows you to cite references and create bibliographies in texts. You can add it to Word on your computer from the RefWorks Tools menu.

Adding references to your assignments

  • Open the document you wish to work on in Word.
  • Select RCM from the top ribbon. This will ask you to sign in to RefWorks.
  • Put your cursor where you want a citation to appear in your text and click on Insert citation in the RefWorks window click next to the reference you want.
  • When you are ready to add a reference list to the end of the document, select the Menu and toggle Bibliography: On. This will add your references to the end of your document.

Please note: There are different versions of the plug-in, so the process may vary slightly from the one above. For troubleshooting contact RefWorks support:
