RefWorks guide

How to add references

References can be added to RefWorks in a number of ways:

  • Exporting from Library Search.
  • Exporting from City databases, such as Jstor and Academic Search Ultimate.
  • Exporting from Google Scholar.
  • Uploading PDFs or documents from your computer.
  • Adding references manually.

When exporting from the services above, choose RefWorks from the list of options.

Library Search

Once you have created a RefWorks account, it is very easy to export references from Library Search. Conduct a search, and from your list of results:

  1. Click on the bookmark icon on the right hand side of the search result(s) you wish to export (labelled 'Save this item'). The icon(s) will turn blue.
  2. The reference(s) will go into a temporary folder at the top right of the screen (now labelled 'Saved Items').A Library Search results page showing steps 1 and 2 described above.
  3. Click on Export to...
  4. Select RefWorks from the drop-down list.A Library Search results page showing steps 3 and 4 described above.

Databases

Search the database. From the list of results, you can usually export individual or multiple results. Sometimes this involves adding the references to a folder to allow you to export them to a reference manager software.

If there is a RefWorks export option, this makes the process much easier. If this option is unavailable, most databases have some type of Export/Save/Mail functionality to enable the export.

Google Scholar

  • Select Settings and then Bibliography manager.
  • Select RefWorks from the drop down menu and then Save.
  • Conduct a search in Google Scholar and you will then see a link under each result to Import into RefWorks.

Adding references from your computer or manually

Select the + icon labelled Add a Reference (top left of the RefWorks menu) to create a new reference, or to upload documents such as PDFs of articles from your computer.

See the video below for advice on adding references yourself.
