RefWorks guide

Bibliographies

In RefWorks, you can create a bibliography from a list of references. This reference list may contain your entire database or selected references.

Create a bibliography by clicking on the symbol in the RefWorks menu, and generate a reference list in your desired style. This will use all the references in a particular folder. You can preview your finished list of references, then copy and paste into your document.

For Harvard, we recommend using Cite Them Right, 12th edition - Harvard style.

Accuracy

Be very careful to check any bibliographies created by RefWorks. If there is any problem with the data quality of the references, errors can appear so it is worth editing any references where you notice there are errors.

RefWorks and its workflow tools are there to assist you but please double check all output.

Creating citations in Microsoft Word

RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM) works with Word and allows you to cite references and create bibliographies in texts. You can add it to Word on your computer from the RefWorks Tools menu.

Adding references to your assignments

  • Open the document you wish to work on in Word.
  • Select RCM from the top ribbon. This will ask you to sign in to RefWorks.
  • Put your cursor where you want a citation to appear in your text and click on Insert citation in the RefWorks window click next to the reference you want.
  • When you are ready to add a reference list to the end of the document, select the Menu and toggle Bibliography: On. This will add your references to the end of your document.

Please note: There are different versions of the plug-in, so the process may vary slightly from the one above. For troubleshooting contact RefWorks support:
