Literature searching for science & technology

This guide is aimed at School of Science & Technology students who are starting work on a literature review for their dissertation or project.

Getting your material

Type of material - think about the resources you need to read to inform your project.

Include a number of peer-reviewed articles from academic or professional journals, as well as a range of books. You can also use other resources such as:

  • Legislation - may cover areas such as security or data protection.
  • Standards and patents - these regulate sectors such as building and construction.
  • Maps - can provide a range of data for numerous projects.
  • Government publications and grey literature - for example, company annual reports, theses and dissertations.
  • Data and statistics - these can be downloaded from business databases or Governmental websites.
