AI for study

Recording your AI use

Keep a record of your interactions with GenAI for your assignments. You may need to provide your prompts and/or the responses as part of your submission.

Do not rely on the tool itself to record your interactions. Instead, save prompts and outputs in a Word document or similar to ensure you can access them again later.

Always check with your lecturer:

  • Whether you are allowed to use AI for any part of your assignment.
  • If you need to acknowledge use of AI, even if you didn't directly use the AI generated content (for example, if you used AI in the development of ideas and concepts in your work).
  • What information you need to provide (e.g. naming the AI tools used, the prompts you used, the output of the AI, the date).
  • How you need to provide any specific information.

Citing and referencing AI-generated content

Cite Them Right Online contains guidance on how to reference GenAI content. The formatting varies depending on the referencing style that you use; choose your referencing style from the top of the page to ensure you have the right information. Your citations and references will be different depending on whether you have generated the AI content yourself, or if the content is publicly available online via a website.
